Friday night lights are back as the Redhawk football team travels to Corsicana Friday at 7:00 p.m. for their first game of the season.
“The first game is really about the Redhawks,” head football coach Matt Swinnea said. “Executing our plan, doing our job, and just cutting loose and getting after it. We don’t know a lot about them, and they don’t know a lot about us. So maybe we can surprise them a little with what we’re doing and gain an advantage there.”
Last year, the Redhawks had a tough year, going 0-10 but senior Ryan Chapman believes that this year will be different.
“I think we will get better results due to our teams’ hard work over the summer and our teams’ dedication,” Chapman said. “I think our team just cares more and that means a lot.”
The team has been preparing since January, working hard through the summer.
“We’ve been at it for a long time,” Swinnea said. “We had all the spring lifting and conditioning, and then we have spring ball. Then, all through the summer, we had 28 workouts and were in the weight room, and twice a week, we had skills. Then July 31st, we hit the ground running with all our practices.”
With all the practice put in, junior Khaleb Cooper still has first-game nerves.
“Yes, I am a little nervous because I heard they aren’t better, but they are bigger, so it’s gone be a competition,” junior Khaleb Cooper said. “It’s also just our first game so you really never know what to expect.”
