It is officially pumpkin spice season. Starbucks’ pumpkin spice latte returned on Thursday even though it was 107 degrees outside.
Fall is my favorite season. I love seeing the leaves changing colors, the weather getting cooler, and especially, everything pumpkin. But I will not be getting a pumpkin spice latte anytime soon. The first day of fall is not until Sept. 23. It’s still 100 degrees out every day. What’s the rush?
I think enjoying pumpkin spice foods and beverages during the actual season of fall is what makes it special. Waiting until the weather cools and the leaves fall allows you to enjoy it more. It’s more satisfying when it fits the setting. When you enjoy something too often or too early, it becomes ordinary.
Even though fall does not yet seem near, many people have begun to indulge in its treats. The limited availability of these products makes us eager to act. We’re sick of summer and appreciate a change of pace.
After weeks on end of 100-degree weather, we cannot wait for fall to come. It doesn’t help that coffee shops and grocery stores put out their seasonal items far too early. Corporations like Starbucks and Target want us to start buying their seasonal items as early as possible so they can maximize profit. The other day, I went to Target and had a hard time not being tempted by the fall-scented candles or Halloween decorations.
Although it’s tempting, I’ve decided this year I’m going to try to refrain from any fall treats until it actually feels like fall. I will not fall victim to marketing strategies or impatience with the weather. When the temperature begins to drop, and the leaves begin to fall, I will have my pumpkin spice latte. I don’t want to take away what makes it special.
