Cross country returns to Warren Sports Complex first thing Thursday to compete in the District 10-5A meet starting at 8:30 a.m.
“I think we’re ready for the meet,” coach Robert Thayer said. “We’ve been working really hard. The athletes are used to the course and they know the competition. We’ve gone over race results from previous meets, and they know where they’re at and what’s expected of them.”
With last year’s first-place finish for both the girls’ and boys’ varsity teams, the program is hoping to achieve similar results again.
“We’re looking hopefully on the girls’ side to place first overall as repeat district champs,” Thayer said. “On the boys’ side, we’re fighting for a third-place finish so we can get the team out to regionals.”
In spite of the high standards on the girl’s side, senior Sydni Wilkins is remaining attentive to the details.
“I am focusing on getting off the line and starting fast because I tend to get boxed in and slow down when I don’t have the best start,” Wilkins said.
On the boys’ side, senior Cade Krung has been taking steps to maximize his performance at Thursday’s meet.
“I’ve been preparing for the meet by being very aware of everything I’m doing whether that be during the workouts or doing the needed recovery,” Krung said. “I’ve been looking at the times of the competitors and looking for the best opportunities to catch people. My expectations for this meet is to get a PR.”
