Lately, I have been wanting to finally watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer, a show my mom has told me to watch for years. Sarah Michelle Gellar plays Buffy, the main character, so I knew I had to watch. She is one of my favorite actresses, and the top movies she has been in are I Know What You Did Last Summer and Scream 2. She just has such a classic look that I love, and she is obviously really talented! It is also October and Halloween time, so it is the perfect time to start a show about vampires.
So I finally sat down and watched the first episode. I would say that I am not a huge “TV show watcher”, probably because it just takes so much time to get from the beginning to the end of the show. At the same time, though, when I really like a TV show, I become obsessed with it really fast. I am also a big fan of The Vampire Diaries, so I do not doubt I will enjoy this show, another one about vampires.
I have always said to never judge a show by its first episode. I think you really have to give a show a couple of episodes before you can really understand the plot and all of the characters. Sometimes you have to get a few episodes in before you can really tell if you like it. But for Buffy the Vampire Slayer this won’t even be a problem because I am already hooked after the first episode.
Starting with the main character, Buffy. I have been obsessed with her straight from the beginning, I mean, how could you not love her with the name “Buffy”. The show starts off with her already knowing she is the “vampire slayer”, which I thought was cool because usually, you have to go through a few episodes before the main character learns what the show is about. It was nice not having to watch her find out she is the “slayer” right at the beginning, which they will probably show in a later episode. She is the new girl at a new school in a new town, and she just makes herself a very likable character from the beginning.
The vampires in the show are different from the ones in The Vampire Diaries. In The Vampire Diaries, the vampires are not entirely the bad characters, but it is clear from the beginning of this show that the vampire will always be the enemy.
The first episode was released in 1997, so you would expect it to not be as well made as the shows now are, but I honestly thought it was pretty good. Of course, there were some parts that you could tell it was a little dated, but I think that makes the show special.
Although I have only watched the first episode, I will definitely be watching the rest of the first season too. I think this show will definitely turn into a comfort show of mine and one that I rewatch during the Halloween season every year. So if you find yourself scrolling for shows this week, find Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
As always,
Love, Haley
