Going more than three weeks without a meet, the swim and dive team plunges into their next competition Thursday at 6 p.m., taking on Dallas Wilson HS and Frisco HS at the Bruce Eubanks Natatorium.
“I am feeling pretty confident going into the meet,” head swim coach Zachariah Gnoza said. “The kids are really kicking it into gear and have been working out hard. We will have a full 31 swimmers and divers combined competing. This is more than our competitors. If the kids race hard, we should have some positive results. I want them to give it their all and finish strong, [with] podium finishes again as well as best times and even TISCA qualifying times earned.”
But the biggest goal for Gnoza is being competitive.
“Dallas Wilson and Frisco High are both in our Region,” he said. “If we can stay competitive with them throughout the meet, by the time we see them again it should be some good racing. Keeping the kids motivated, helping them stay healthy, and keeping a positive mindset throughout the rest of the season is how we are going to improve.”
This is especially relevant to sophomore Derek Hinz, who has been recovering from shoulder injuries.
“I am feeling quite good going into this meet,” Hinz said. “I think that the fact I have been swimming for quite some time now will help me a lot with technique [but] I am working on strengthening my mentality for sprinting to get past that barrier preventing from going my fastest.”
