The girls’ cross country team competed in the UIL 5A State Championship in Round Rock on Friday and ran home with a 10th place finish.
“This group of young ladies did such an outstanding job competing on a big stage,” coach Khera Vay said. “The sport of cross country is so mentally, emotionally and physically challenging and these 9 girls never backed away from any form of challenge they were presented with.”
The top finisher for the Redhawks was once again senior Sydni Wilkins who placed fifth out of 151 girls.
“I am insanely proud of not only my individual effort but also the effort of the entire team,” Wilkins said. “I think my performance at state proves that all my hard work this season paid off. Overall the trip was so much fun and we definitely had a lot of fun and made a bunch of memories.”
For senior Kayla Winter, finishing the season at state brought a blend of emotions.
“I’m definitely sad to have finished the season, since it was my last year running cross country,” Winter said. “However, I think there is no better way it could’ve ended than getting to go to state with my teammates. I’m super happy with the way this season went, so it being over is bittersweet.”
