The Redhawks girls’ basketball spread their wings all the way to Utah, when they competed in the Holiday Hoopfest Friday and Saturday. The team took on Westlake High School from Saratoga Springs, UT and Riverdale Ridge High School from Thornton, CO beating both teams.
“It was good, the teams we played, particularly the first team, was very fundamental and had a very specific style of play,” head coach Ross Reedy said. “There was a lot for us to learn from. Being able to win and being able to be in some of those moments, it was nice to see and nice to get to experience.”
In Friday’s game against Westlake, sophomore Jacy Abii put up 34 points. The five star athlete then went on to put up 25 points against Riverdale on Saturday.
“I don’t even remember doing it,” Abii said. “But, it was a great experience and thing to accomplish.”
In addition to picking up two wins, the out of state trip allowed the team to bond. The girls spent three days together and two nights, not just shooting hoops, but getting to explore Utah.
“The whole experience was a lot of fun,” sophomore Lilian Johnson said. “We got to spend a lot of time together at the hotel and I definitely got to know my teammates more. We had lots of team dinners and went to the mall together. We were all definitely amazed by the mountains and the snow.”
A successful learning experience and a chance to bond in the eyes of Reedy, he hopes the girls will get offered a similar opportunity in the future.
“Take them every chance that we get, it’s a great opportunity,” he said. “It’s a great opportunity for the kids and to open them up. It opens them up in two different ways. It opens them up in the sense that it brings them closer together, and also as they get closer together they get to see more parts of the world.”
