For their second meet of the season, Redhawks track and field takes on the McKinney Boyd Relays Friday and Saturday at the Ron Poe Stadium.
“This meet is more set up like a real meet,” girls’ head coach Kheara Vay said. “We have kids competing in events that they’ll likely run most of the season, all the way to regional, district and area meets, whereas the last two meets have been more untraditional in who’s running what events.”
With the season heating up, many of the runners are excited for the meet, hoping to reach new goals.
“I’m hoping that I can PR on my 400m split, and that all of the relays and handoffs go well,” freshman Chelsea Ross said. “I think the team will do really well at this meet, I’m hoping to place 1st or 2nd for our DMR.”
Beyond physical strength and skill, the girls’ team has also created a community within the team, helping to foster strong connections with each other.
“I think our biggest strength as a team is the bond between our girls’ team, they’re such a fun group and they love to support each other,” Vay said. “A lot of times in track and field, because there’s so many events, you end up with cliques of people for whatever event they’re in, but this group is really good at being inclusive with everybody.”
