Model UN competed in a state-wide competition that finished on Sunday where students shared solutions to real-life political issues with others in a mock United Nations session. Eight Redhawks won awards including the two chair awards.
“[The competition] was really good; we had a lot of delegates place,” Model UN sponsor Amanda Peters said. “We actually had three people on the secretarial, which is like the panel that’s controlling everything.”
MUN delegate Ram Bonthala appreciated seeing all the work the Redhawks put into this conference.
“Getting to see all the researched delegates was my favorite part,” Bonthala said.
The state session of MUN was more similar to an actual conference of the UN, with a wider variety of delegates and schools in attendance.
“There were a lot more people,” Peters said. “It was a multi-day event. There were a lot of social events as well and the kids were able to mingle with other kids from other school districts and other schools. There were kids all the way from middle school all the way to high school.”
This setup allowed participants to be exposed to more viewpoints, as well as work on their own proposals and presentation skills.
“I learnt valuable speaking skills,” Bonthala said. “[It] helped me refine my presentational writing and speaking skills that I will use going forward.”
One Redhawk received a prestigious honor only given to a single participating delegate each year throughout the entire state of Texas.
“Aashi Oswal, she’s a junior, was elected as the new UN Secretary General for Texas for the next session,” Peters said. “She’s like the executive now. She’ll preside over the MUN session for the whole state of Texas.”
