Dual credit classes started Monday, and most dual credit students are taking various English and Social Studies classes. This year, 13 Redhawks are taking Calculus 3, Multivariable Calculus.
This class is one of the last few mathematics classes offered for students who have completed AP Calculus BC before their senior year are eligible to take the class offered at Collin College.
“I finished Calc BC and I needed another math credit, and I feel like it will be useful for my STEM major,” senior Jenny Wang said. “I’m excited to learn more calculus, and it’s nice to have a class at home.”
The class is asynchronous with students learning the material at home, but not at their own pace. Students must still keep up with due dates and complete tests under HonorLock.
“I won’t have live feedback and quick responses because of the delay it will take to grade each assignment with its limited amount of attempts,” senior Amogh Aryan said.
Wang, like Aryan, keeps the possibility of becoming complacent in mind.
“Without a teacher there’s a chance you can fall behind and it might be hard to catch up,” Wang said. “There’s definitely some downsides.”
Although the course is asynchronous, students will still be assigned a professor and given an ample amount of support through Collin College and the Canvas Course page.
“Collin has provided different textbooks and different resources to use when getting stuck, Aryan said. “There’s emails and help desks available as well.”
