Look at that! A new trailer for Minecraft, one of the greatest games known to man, has been released!
And well… it sure isn’t what everyone expected.
Minecraft is a survival and sandbox game released in 2011. I haven’t played it in years but when I was little, I used to play it for hours, just fighting zombies and building all kinds of structures.
When I saw the teaser on YouTube, I got so excited. I couldn’t wait to see what was put together for the movie. Minecraft has aged like fine wine, and if the game was incredible, I expected the trailer to be incredible too.
However, there were a lot of doubts that lingered in my mind as I watched the trailer. I’m not sure what to think.
Let’s start with my personal pros. The backgrounds and textures look pretty good. The sheep and llama did look really wonky, which is pretty understandable considering how Minecraft originally made them look. But now that they have more detail, it makes them look more real, which I don’t mind too much.
The same goes with the hoglins, which were the humanized pigs with the armor. They’re honestly super cool-looking and I love how aggressive and gremlin-like they act.
Now moving on to my personal cons. Respectfully, who was in charge of casting? This is more targeted towards the role of Steve, who is being played by Jack Black. It isn’t him that’s the problem, it’s the fact that he doesn’t fit the Steve role as he should. He’s a phenomenal actor, but that doesn’t mean he fits every role.
Another one is the fact that it isn’t fully animated. Don’t get me wrong, I like the concept of real people being in another dimension, such as a video game. It makes for a fun experience to watch, but Minecraft was made to fully be a 3D animated film from the beginning. Anyone remember Minecraft Story Mode?
There are billions of 3D Minecraft animated videos on YouTube and they would go viral fast. They’re fun to watch and appreciate the amount of dedication and creativity that went into them. How come the trailer couldn’t follow that tradition? Sure, there was some ‘Minecraft in Real Life’ content, but again, 3D animation should’ve been utilized instead of live-action.
Am I nervous about the final product? Very much so. But I’m obviously going to see it. It’ll be fun feeling that anticipation in the theater while I watch the previews, waiting for the film to start and see if it’s as untrustworthy as it looks. Let’s cross our fingers y’all.
