District 4-5A play starts Friday for the Redhawks football team as they travel to Lucas to take on the Lovejoy Leopards at 7:30 p.m. in an away game
“I am a little nervous to play Lovejoy,” tight end, junior Connor Johnson said. “They have always been a good team, and we have to open district play with them.”
These two teams have yet to meet up since 2021, when the Redhawks came out on top with a close 27-24 win in their final district game of that season, broadcast on ESPN 2.
“Obviously, we’re two different teams now,” head football coach Matt Swinnea said. “All these seniors that were freshmen when you were I mean, I don’t even know if they have those memories. We’re going to go over there and give it a go, it’s a new season.”
The message from Swinnea was short and simple: for this week’s game, the athletes need to focus on themselves.
“Really, it’s just all about us,” Swinnea said. “And so we’re just trying to get better and what[ever] happens happens.”
