Disney and Netflix have really tripped up with this one.
These two companies have angered lots of people due to the cancellation of the two popular shows The Owl House (2020) and Inside Job (2021). The story and characters were a huge hit among lots of people only for them to be canceled for the stupidest reasons.
The Owl House is a show about a girl named Luz who gets transported to another dimension full of magic and monsters and gets taken under the care of a witch, inspiring her to become a witch as well. This show was canceled and got the 3rd season cut short.
Most people assumed it was because of the LGBTQ+ representation. In some countries, shows that include queer references are not shown there. Dana Terrace, the creator of the show, confirmed that it wasn’t because of that, it was because the show was attracting more of an older audience than their target audience.
It’s very confusing because it implies that only little kids should watch their media. Disney is supposed to be fun for the whole family, and plus, the show was a big hit. You can’t exactly control who watches the show and who doesn’t. Shouldn’t Disney be proud that they released something that tons of people love?
The same goes for Inside Job, which is a Netflix series created by Shion Takeuchi about a woman named Raegan Ridley who works as a mad scientist with her dysfunctional group to keep the world’s crazy conspiracy theories hidden.
It broke many fans’ hearts, including Taekuchi, to see such a great project like this one get canceled.
The reason for this show’s cancellation is most likely because of budget and low completion rates. Animation is unfortunately very expensive and it takes a long time to work with compared to live action. The watch hours for the show were huge, but the completion rate for the second season was below 60%, and Netflix decided not to proceed with it.
Instead of giving Inside Job another chance, they decide to throw money at other shows that aren’t even as good. Lots of people are disappointed that Big Mouth is getting more attention from Netflix when it’s clear that it’s not what the fans want. Was it really necessary for them to just give up like that?
I’d also like to mention that before Inside Job’s cancellation, Netflisx had promised another season. People were so excited just to get shut down later on. It was so mean and insufficient of them to decide to cancel something after ‘confirming’ that it will get another season.
I still wonder what could’ve been if these companies hadn’t canceled some of their biggest hits. It’s disappointing for a lot of us and the creators of these shows, and I feel a lot of pity for them to see their creativity be cut and wasted all because a company said, “Nuh uh.”
