“Why can’t I do this? I feel so dumb.” “I feel so stupid.” “I’m not smart enough for this.”
A lot of us have felt this way or had these thoughts run through their brain at some point, and it really sucks.
When we’re not able to do something that other people consider easy, it often turns to comparing yourself to others and feeling like you can’t ever do it. It isn’t a good feeling and it makes you feel bad about yourself.
It’s easy just to assume that you’re not smart enough or that you’re too stupid. And even some neurodivergent people feel like they’re ‘stupid’ when they have a hard time focusing on something or just aren’t as socially aware as others.
However, just because you’re not good at one thing doesn’t mean that you aren’t good at other things.
When you think of the word ‘smart,’ the first thing that would usually come to mind is math or science. That means book smart. Someone could be very good at math but not good with their surroundings or connecting with people around them.
Someone could be not as skilled with math but skilled in art and music. They may be very intelligent in social situations and are aware of the people around them. Does not being good at math or science mean you are stupid? Of course not!
There’s many different kinds of intelligence, and it’s always important to discover what your true passion is and what zone you feel best with working in.
Of course, it’s always great to put in effort and try to improve your skills in other subjects. But it’s never good to immediately put yourself down and keep repeating “stupid” in your head. Trying your best is what matters the most.
The worst thing you can do is make fun of other people for not being good at something, whether it’s because of insecurity or simple entertainment for yourself.
I may not be the best at memorization or understanding things as quickly as other people might, and I might not know a lot of things about math or history, but that doesn’t mean that I’m simply not smart enough or stupid. It just means that they aren’t subjects that I’m particularly interested in or subjects that aren’t my strong suit.
You can be very intelligent at anything you set your mind to. Your passion is your passion and don’t pressure yourself to know everything about every subject in order to ‘be smart.’
Don’t compare yourself to others because your path is your own path. You don’t have to be exactly like anyone else. Be yourself and be proud of who you are.
