I have learned many lessons with my diagnosis and found lots of things to be grateful for, but my friends truly are at the top of that list. When you go through such a major event and change in your life the people who care about you most are revealed. Thankfully I found that all my friends are absolutely the best.
Just as we normally talk about my friend’s upcoming sports activities or love lives, my treatments and health is a regular part of our conversations too. My friends are constantly checking up on me and have grown to know my schedule. They know how to help when I’m feeling a little fatigued and can even notice the signs.
My friends have been my biggest support system throughout everything, and I couldn’t ask for a better group of people. They even have made the long journey to the hospital to visit me during my treatments, and even after I was randomly hospitalized one time. I remember that day so vividly, I was so happy to see them. I was looking rough after being hospitalized and the girls helped me by straightening my hair and cleaning my face. We went for a long walk around the hospital pushing my IV pole around, and they even bought me Starbucks.
That is just one instance in which my friends have shown great support for me and my condition. Our low moments in our lives give us the greatest lessons and one of them can be friendships.
Next week I will touch on the surgery I underwent last year. I can’t wait to continue to share my story with you! Remember our struggles don’t define us.
