With the fall show, Chemical Imbalance ending its three day run on Sunday, auditions for the winter musical, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, were Monday with callbacks in the auditorium on Tuesday and a cast list expected to be posted on the callboard outside the Black Box on Wednesday.
“Sometimes people just pop at auditions and we go ‘Oh, that’s the kid!’,” theater tech director Aaron Yowell said. “So we look for kids that are coachable, more than anything, students that have some natural ability or students that take direction really well, and then singers who can move a little bit for musicals because in musicals you can’t just park and bark, you have to be able to move and sing and act.”
Musical cuts for the auditions were put out in the Redhawks Thespians GroupMe on Sept. 21, giving students such as Analise Serna a little over a week to prepare.
“I’ve always been really extroverted, I like showing off, I’m very confident in general, and singing is a passion of mine,” Serna said, “So, I guess they [The directors] are looking for both looking the part, sounding the part, and being confident doing it. If you’re similar in demeanor to the character, like personality traits, things like that. Be confident, do not be scared.”
With actors preparing for auditions, the technicians are waiting on the crew list, which comes out Friday.
“All technicians have a specific job that no one ever thinks about. No props crew, no props. No costumes, no clothing. No scenic design, no set,” freshman Kayleigh Do said.“Try to help out as much as possible. Make friends. It helps you down the road if you want to continue to do tech because you’re familiar with our space and working with people who have been with the company for a while.”
