I just watched the new Beetlejuice Beetlejuice movie and it was a blast!
It was such a fun and entertaining watch with my mom. I loved the characters and everyone did a good job with acting. There was a lot of stuff happening in the movie, but they managed to pack it all in without making it feel rushed or overwhelming.
Not only is there Michael Keaton‘s Beetlejuice, there are two other versions of this character. There is the Beetlejuice from the cartoon (1989), who is played by Steven Ouimette and Beetlejuice from Beetlejuice the Musical (2019) who is played by Alex Brightman on Broadway.
The question is, which Beetlejuice is the best? Which one do people personally ride for?
Based on the comments on the crossover art that I see on Pinterest, most of them were saying that they find Brightman’s Beetlejuice to be their favorite.
It’s honestly really hard to pick. People love Brightman’s silly and mischievous Beetlejuice, Ouimette’s Beetlejuice and his wholesome relationship with Lydia Deetz (while obviously still being his mischievous self) and Keaton’s creepy and overall weird Beetlejuice. You can’t beat the original, but you also can’t not love the more recent alternate universes.
The way that Keaton’s Beetlejuice differs from the other two Beetlejuices is very comedic. While the other two are more seen as a best friend/uncle figure to Lydia Deetz, the original is weird and clearly doesn’t understand boundaries.
Obviously, I can see why some younger fans would lean more towards the other two, considering how Keaton’s Beetlejuice was really trying to stick his nose into places where he shouldn’t be and how he tried to marry Lydia Deetz, who is a MINOR, in the first movie. This was also the plot in the musical, however the marriage was repeatedly joked by Beetlejuice that it was a “green card thing,” meaning that he’s not trying to be creepy, he just wants to fulfill his task of coming back into the living world.
Keaton’s Beetlejuice is SUPPOSED to be creepy. It’s supposed to make you uncomfortable and edgy in your seat. His character is hilarious and nothing could ever beat the original.
I can never ever pick which one is my favorite. Why do I have to pick when I could love all three equally? All of them are a great character and are done really well. Brightman, Keaton, and Ouimette all did a great job with their acting and made the Beetlejuices very entertaining.
I recommend watching the cartoon and musical if you haven’t seen them. Although the musical closed on Broadway and the original cast is done, you can still search up clips and listen to the songs, or go see it on tour!
All three projects deserve so much love and respect. Beetlejuice will always hold a special place in my heart and it’s my favorite spooky movie. Which one is your favorite?
