As a part of class projects and essays, English II students had to choose books dealing with fear for the next nine weeks.
“This can be emotional fear, physical fear, any type of fear that the book evokes in the student,” English II Advanced teacher Jennifer Herrera said. “We are studying how creators evoke fear in us, what the lure of the fear is, how they use plots, and other elements, characterization, to evoke that fear.”
Once students read these book, they will complete a product that they can submit to their local carnival.
“At the end of the unit, students will be able to create a product that they decide they are going to submit to their local carnival to express their understanding of how these authors use these techniques, and elements to evoke fear in us the reader,” Herrera said.”
Although the books are all about fear, for the students, the work isn’t that scary.
“The activities that are involved are claim, making a theme, and writing an essay,” sophomore Bassam Bismar said. “These activities are very involved because they’re very collaborative and very interactive.”
