The run to state continues for several Redhawks after the girls’ team earned the District 11-5A championship, and senior Dominic Ward advanced to the 5A Region II meet at UT Arlington on Oct. 22.
The girls’ team nearly swept the top five places with junior Caitlyn Ruback (2nd), junior Srishti Shetty (4th), senior Sofia Golladay (5th), senior Sophie Lopez (6th), and freshman Grace Harris (7th) all placing in the top seven to give the Redhawks a 37-point win over the second place team Centennial.
“I’m really proud of the girl for placing first,” girls’ head coach Khera Vay said. “They worked hard throughout the season and it paid off for them.”
The boys’ team didn’t have as much success but Ward’s 9th place finish was enough to advance.
“The course was pretty rough but I pushed through and qualified for regionals,” Ward said. “I am super happy about that and ready to compete even more.”
With temperatures reaching the upper 80s as the meet continued, the conditions weren’t ideal for any of the teams, but were perhaps the worst for the last level to run.
“It was a very tough race especially for the JV boys because of the heat,” Vay said. “I am very proud of every runner and am excited for next season.”
