Did anyone have that ‘diary’ phase when you were little? Whether it was keeping a diary or reading iconic diary-esque book franchises such as Dork Diaries, Dear Dumb Diary, or Diary of a Wimpy Kid?
Diaries were a little quirky book that kept all your secrets, school drama, or crushes. It was a funny element that was in many high school movies. Of course, not all diaries are like that, but the kind of diaries I knew about were specifically these kinds.
When I was little, I definitely read some of those books and watched some of those movies. I thought that having a diary would make me feel so much older. My first diary was My Little Pony themed with a heart locket.
I would write in it occasionally about the past week, whatever crazy event happened, my future wishes, etc. It made me feel happy to just spill out my thoughts onto a piece of paper with my colorful pen.
Although it made me feel older, I was a bit disappointed while having it. At the time, I was in the early years of elementary school. There wasn’t anything crazy happening at school or anything that was ‘Disney movie’ worthy.
School and life in general just isn’t like a quirky Disney movie, and it kinda sucks.
It was funny to have that phase. I eventually got bored of writing in that little book everyday, so I just stopped. My hand kept getting tired and I kept forgetting to make entries.
Diaries, of course, aren’t always ‘high school movie’ related. They can be for recording data for a certain subject, coping with stress, sadness, or fear, keeping checklists, etc. It’s actually a really great idea to keep a diary; it helps keep yourself in check.
This genre and the 2010’s will always hold a special place in my heart. I’ll miss them dearly and cherish those memories. Make sure to cherish your childhood because ‘life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around every once in a while, you could miss it.’ -Ferris Bueller
