Name: Matthew Hung
Grade: 12
Fine Art: Band (Clarinet)
Years of Experience: 7
Wingspan: Why did you choose to join band?
Hung: “In middle school everyone had to join a fine arts class and I decided to join band because I knew a lot of people that did band. I did for all of middle school and so I’m just doing it in high School?”
Wingspan: What made you choose the clarinet?
Hung: “So when I first decided to join band, the band directors at Vandy basically held this meeting or tryouts where they found the ebay instrument for you and I ended up with the clarinet.”
Wingspan: What has been you favorite memory in band?
Hung: “It’s probably just been the season this year. We did really good, much better than we have in previous years so I guess I would say that. It’s a great way to end off my senior year.”
Wingspan: What is the most challenging aspect of joining band?
Hung: “I think it’s probably the time commitment. We have to go to all of the football games, sometimes we practice in the mornings, we have to practice during the summer, and it’s double-blocked. I think if I didn’t do band I’d have three times that amount of free time that I do now.”
Wingspan: If you could give your younger self some advice about band, what would it be?
Hung: “Just to take it slow and that sometimes you’re gonna want to quit but seeing things through all the way is really important.”
