After going 4-10 in District 11-5A play during the 2023-24 school year, the Redhawks boys basketball team seeks to turn things around for the better as they tip off their new season Friday at 7:15 p.m. in an away game against the McKinney North Bulldogs.
“Individually I am hoping to knock down some threes but most importantly take care of the ball and be in the right spots defensively,” junior Toshiro Mahtani said. “As a team we are definitely looking to come out with a win but we are also trying to work out some of the kinks and problems that may come up.”
With the new season, Mahtani is cautiously optimistic about the Redhawk’s chances of getting a win.
“We have been coached to play to a standard no matter the opponent, so compared to Mckinney North as long as we play to our standard the whole game we should come out with a win,” Mahtani said.
Assistant coach Robert Wilson partially shares that sentiment but says the team needs to focus on the endgame and stay level-headed no matter the results.
“The biggest challenge will be learning how to finish games,” Wilson said. “Last year we didn’t have much success, so we need to learn how to come together and finish some of those close games. On top of that, if we are able to have some success, we can never let it get to our heads. Pre-district can be a fun time for players, but the games that truly matter happen when we get into district play. Our district is tough, and we have to be ready night in and night out.”
