Students competed at Youth and Government Districts Saturday at Duncanville High School. Two students won Distinguished Delegate in their respective committees and they will be advancing to state in Austin.
“Districts felt so good, especially because we had such an increase in competitors this year,” YG President, senior Aashi Oswal said. “It was really rewarding to see everyone enjoy the committee and debate and I feel like it was an overall good experience.”
With 10+ new students that joined the team this year, districts served as a place for them to practice creating and debating their bills.
“The results were what I expected for the rest of the team because competition is so hard and people are still getting past the learning curve,” Oswal said. “But that’s exactly what you wanted to do so now for the state they have more confidence.”
For sophomore Ish Aggarwal, this opportunity allowed him to understand how YG works and connect with new people.
“Districts were fun because I got to meet a lot of new people,” Aggarwal said. “I was nervous before, but slowly, throughout the competition, I did better and better. I prepared by looking over other people’s work and understanding it thoroughly, along with memorizing my speech and researching my topic.”
More than just practicing debating their bills, for students such as junior Mahi Kosuri, she learned how to be a clerk for the conference.
“I wasn’t really expecting an award going in, but rather learning to chair and clerk for Youth and Government,” Kosuri said. “I definitely learned a lot because I went in not being as confident of a chair, and came out knowing that it is definitely something that I could do again going forward.”
