Music has been a part of Claire Rosinkranz’s life since she was eight years old. As a child, she would help her dad with songs and jingles for commercials. Her dad continued to help her make music, this time her own, and these songs for fun morphed into something much more when Rosinkranz released her single “Backyard Boy” (part of her EP BeVerly Hills BoYfRiEnd) on TikTok, where it took off in 2020. Subsequently, she released another EP, 6 Of A Billion, in 2021 and then her debut album, Just Because, in 2023.
Rosinkranz’s songs are fun, airy, somewhat whimsical, and appropriate for anything from a roadtrip through California to coffee in New York City. Each of the backtracks of her pieces is upbeat, and simplistic but not in a way that makes you bored. The simple baseline beat allows Rosinkranz to showcase her voice, which adds a ton of variety to the song. She has this way of singing, where it’s never the same throughout the song, and it’s really cool. Rosinkranz finds this way to suit her voice to the different instrumentation on the track, so no matter what song is playing, her voice fits in perfectly.
In “stuck on us” with Aidan Bissett, the song is a lot more rock-based with electric guitar and more aggressive drums. Despite this style of music being far from her usual indie pop style, Rosinkranz makes her voice a little deeper to match the tone of the song. However in “Wes Anderson”, she matches the more indie-centered beat with higher vocals and longer-held notes. This works to blend the modified intro with the backtrack, creating a seamless transition between instrumentation and modified vocals throughout the piece.
Rosinkranz continues this whimsical, kinda funky vibe throughout her debut album, which wasn’t entirely uncharted territory as it was the same vibe as her previous releases. Her lyrics are almost poetic, and they make you stop and think for a bit despite the songs being upbeat. Rosinkranz also has a lot of “la, la, la” vocals in the back of her songs, which help elevate the simplistic baseline. The beat changes aren’t perfectly integrated and can catch a listener off-guard, but it does so in a way that it’s more of a pleasant surprise than an audible annoyance and furthers the indie feel of the song. The tracks on Just Because are all different from one another, and that’s what makes it so interesting, but you can definitely tell that they’re Rosinkranz’s work.
