Lifetime Recreation Outdoor students learn essential hunting skills through a hands-on Hunter Education unit. The unit, guided by the Hunters Ed website, covers topics ranging from hunting safety to required permissions, providing students with the knowledge they can carry into future hunting experiences.
For freshman Advay Kongorpalli, the lessons were both informative and engaging.
“The hunter unit was really interesting,” Kongorpalli said. “It was nice to learn about how hunting works in Texas, how hunters go about things, and how firearms work. Learning about hunting different animals and how things differ between them was fascinating.”
The curriculum, led by Coach Robert Thayer, delves deep into hunting safety, camping techniques, and preparation strategies for hunting trips. Students gain a comprehensive understanding of animal tracking and firearm handling.
“We just completed our hunter education course,” Thayer said. “During this unit, kids learned about hunting safety, firearm safety, shooting skills, and hunting skills. Teaching them how to prepare for a hunt and trace animals was great. I love having this opportunity to teach kids.”
The program will culminate with students earning hunting certificates and licenses after completing an online exam through Texas Parks and Wildlife. This certification is a lifetime credential, marking a significant achievement for participating students.
“The students will take a Hunter Ed certification exam, which will be a lifetime certification,” Thayer said. “They’ll be taking that in a couple of weeks, and it’s something they can carry with them forever.”
