District opener against Frisco for girls’ basketball

After winning against the Australian Basketball Travellers 41-37 on Thursday, the Redhawks girls’ basketball team is feeling confident going into the opening game of District 11-5A play against Frisco on Tuesday at 5:45 p.m., but is still looking to improve certain skills.

After winning against the Australian Basketball Travellers 41-37 on Thursday, the Redhawks girls’ basketball team is feeling confident going into the opening game of District 11-5A play against Frisco on Tuesday at 5:45 p.m., but is still looking to improve certain skills.

Varsity player senior Kathryn Murphy feels that defense and team play is still important in the upcoming match.

“We play Frisco, and the things we’re really going to focus on are the principle things like playing solid defense and learning by playing together,” Murphy said. “With the win against Australia we have under us now, hopefully we’ll keep rolling and getting wins like that.”

Wingspan was unable to contact the Redhawks girls’ basketball coach for pre-game interviews.

In the eyes of head coach Justin Koons, the team didn't perform as well as it could have in their last tournament. “The past weekend's War Games weren't our best performance for both boys and girls,” Koons said. “There is definitely room for improvement. Next week for boys is districts so hopefully we will be prepared for that and compete hard.”

With just two games left before the start of District 11-5A play, the boys’ basketball team (11-5) is hoping to get more preparation under their belts with a home game Tuesday against Wakeland (9-5).
