Slow, sentimental music is making a comeback and largely in part to British singer/songwriter Myles Smith, and while he hasn’t been on the music scene very long, he hasn’t wasted a second in establishing himself with his soulful style.
Going into music seemed like the natural move for Smith, as he has been enveloped by music ever since he was a child. Growing up in Luton, Britain, he was surrounded by various music genres such as punk, pop, hip-hop, Irish music, and other singer/songwriters who would foreshadow his own future. At the age of 12, he had purchased a guitar and was performing at local open-mic nights after teaching himself to play not only piano but guitar as well. He later graduated from University of Nottingham in 2019.
Hoping to take his music beyond Luton, Smith started posting his music and covers of others’ music onto TikTok. In 2022, the CEO of Extended Play Music Group, saw one of his videos and offered to jumpstart Smith’s music career by being his manager. Since then Smith has released two EPs – A Minute… and You Promised A Lifetime.
A Minute… and You Promised A Lifetime are fairly similar, but You Promised A Lifetime features slightly more folk-centered music. Songs like “Behind” and “River” incorporate Smith’s signature acoustic guitar skills, but does so in a way that mimics the twangy riffs of country music. A lot of the focus is placed on the simple instrumentation of this album, and rightfully so. Smith’s powerful voice blends warmly with the vibrant guitar, and just a hint of his British accent can be heard, which adds a distinctive twist to his music.
Smith’s most recent EP, A Minute…, still highlights Smith’s impressive guitar skills, but it also places emphasis on his warm, clear vocals. This EP also features his most popular song, “Stargazing”, which launched Smith onto the music scene and so far has garnered over 620 million streams on Spotify. His music in this EP is heartfelt, uplifting, personal, and a perfect springboard for Smith to launch himself off of and share more of his music with the world.
