A typical party decoration is being used in a different way by chemistry students as they learn about a math heavy component of the class.
“Students had to do the baking soda and vinegar lab they are familiar with from elementary school,” chemistry teacher Donald Mcneal said. “But, this time they’re filling up balloons with the amount of gas and try to calculate the amount of gas that was made to find out how much was left.”
Since this unit can be complicated, it is helpful for the students to get a visual experiment to help them with their understanding.
“The balloon lab gave us an in-person representation of the way stoichiometry works and the mathematics of it and it helped me understand,” sophomore Wyn Shippy said.
