Although the Redhawks track team was supposed to compete in their first real meet of the season Feb. 13, the cold weather forced the ultimate decision to cancel it all together.
“It kind of sucked but at the same time it was good to get an extra week of preparations and I’m glad I’m not running in such cold weather,” senior Dominic Ward said.
With the weather being in the low 20s, runners could have risked injury if the meet had gone on as scheduled..
“It’s definitely not good to run in that type of weather with the race uniform on since it’s so revealing and has no protection from the cold,” boys head coach Robbie Thayer said. “The body can’t heat up enough and get the proper warm up it needs to perform at the level that is needed for these athletes.”
Even though the weather is still cold, the Trojan Relays is currently still scheduled to take place Saturday in Carrollton with the exception of the girls field events which have been cancelled.
“Because of the really chilly temperatures during field events we decided to hold off just to keep the athletes healthy and ready to go for championship season,” girls head coach Kiera Vay said.
For many of the Redhawks, they’re ready to finally compete.
“I’m happy but sad because my field events got cancelled so I can’t long jump, but I’m excited since this is our first official meet of the season,” senior Cayley Beaumont said. “I’m ready to get out there and start my season.”
