Singer-songwriter Faye Webster began her Undressed at the Symphony tour just a couple of weeks ago. Undressed at the Symphony is Webster’s fifth studio album, and is arguably some of her best work.
I attended Webster’s concert at the Toyota Music Factory on Wednesday, for her second concert of the tour, and was really impressed.
Mei Ehara, a Japanese pop artist, opened the show and began promptly at the start time of 8:00 p.m. Webster took the stage at around 9:00 p.m. and performed for nearly 90 minutes.
I had a great seat just behind the general admission floor, and for this concert I was grateful to have a seat rather than in the pit. It was below freezing outside and quite warm inside the venue. For this reason, several people in the pit passed out due to heat exhaustion. Webster handled the interruptions very well by caring for her audience then seamlessly transitioning back to her performance.
What impressed me most about Webster was her ability to replicate her recorded sound live. Her vocals consistently stayed true to her studio recordings.
I also found myself impressed by the four members of her band. They each played two or three different instruments throughout the show, sometimes simultaneously. The pedal steel guitar stood out to me as being a main component that contributes to the dreamy feel of Webster’s music while adding a country vibe. The saxophone and drums added hints of R&B that paid homage to her home city of Atlanta.
It’s difficult to describe Webster’s sound because of the variety of sounds and instruments she uses. One could argue that her music is folk, alternative, soft rock, country, R&B, indie, or even at times hip-hop.
Regardless of the diversity in her audience, it was clear that Webster’s music resonates with her fans. Throughout the show, the crowd was filled with people singing along and held their phones up to record. The most popular songs such as Right Side of My Neck, In a Good Way, and Kingston, earned the most crowd participation. Although she sang a large portion of her discography, strangely enough she did not perform Undressed at the Symphony, at the Undressed at the Symphony tour.
Overall, this concert was one of my favorites I’ve been to. Webster’s creative blend of genres and her soft voice created a dream-like atmosphere at the Toyota Music Factory that I hope to experience again.
