While painted ceiling tiles bring art to the roof of the school, the National Art Honor Society has been brightening up the walls by painting a large mural in the lecture hall.
“The main design was done by our secretary, Al Zhang,” NAHS officer, senior Tuhina Das said. “Al was in charge of [the design] and sketched it out at work one day and then I went in and did the colors and the little highlights and details.”
The mural, which reads “You matter!”, is currently being painted during advisory by volunteers on Mondays and Tuesdays.
“I like working on the mural because it is relaxing,” junior Vivienne Haggard said. “And it’s a beneficial activity that contributes to the look of the school.”
Through this project, NAHS aims to not only allow art students to show off their creativity, but boost school morale as well.
“We wanted to do a couple things with this mural; one, we wanted to have some kind of group art project going on for the art students here at Liberty because that’s something we get every year,” Das said. “The other one was this was a joint effort between us and Ms. Whaling. She thought it would be great to cultivate school spirit, have students actually get something hands-on, leave their mark on the school, and spread our ‘you matter’ message around.”
The project, estimated to take a couple months, is projected to be finished in a couple weeks due to the outpouring of effort from NAHS volunteers.
“[The mural project] is going well,” art teacher Emily Delarios said. “It’s going faster than we thought it would and there’s always challenges when you’re doing something like a mural, but we’re pleased with the paint quality and it’s looking really good.”
