Why are there so many movie sequels being made?
Just because people liked the first movie or liked a show doesn’t mean that it needs a spin-off of any sort. Some people CANNOT accept that all good things come to an end.
Recently, a teaser trailer was announced for Shrek 5. And honestly, it looks really bad. First of all, Shrek looks way more cartoony and less realistic than the original. We already have four movies, the 4th one being called “Shrek Forever After,” which is similar to the iconic fairy tale ending of “happily ever after.”
Heard that? It means the end. So why make a 5th movie?
I personally don’t have much hope for Shrek 5. Why does it look so much more cartoony and smooth? I liked how realistic it looked in the original. Somehow they made Shrek look uglier in the new trailer.
Of course, not all sequels are bad, but most of them don’t do very well. That’s why it’s risky to make sequels of movies or shows that people really love, because what if it ends up ruining the franchise?
Let’s use Gravity Falls as an example. The show is very popular among mystery and supernatural lovers and had a very emotional yet breathtaking ending, leaving fans wanting more. Although Alex Hirsch decided to conclude Gravity Falls, lots of people were still begging for another season. The show itself is fantastic, but does it really need another season?
I personally feel like the show is great as it is with its ending. It’s definitely better if the fans interpret what happens in the future with our main characters instead of there being another season.
The same is with Coraline. Fans really want a Coraline 2, but it is highly unlikely because Lakia doesn’t do sequels. Coraline is an outstanding movie as it is and doesn’t need any more added to it.
What’s sad is that sequels are mostly made because since people loved the first movie, seasons of a show, etc, companies think that they can make even more money with sequels. And most of the time, the sequel doesn’t do as well.
Making sequels can be a gamble in a way. Will people end up loving that there’s more content related to that movie or show, or will it just be another cash grab and end up milking the franchise?
Let’s just hope that not too many sequels will be made. “Out with the old and in with the new?” Not this time.
