Volleyball plays its first district game at home on Friday at 5:30 p.m. against Wakeland. This is the first year of the newly reshaped District 13-5A, which consists of all Frisco schools. But after more than a dozen tournament and non-district games, the team is ready for the playoff push.

“We are really prepared,” senior Megan Johnson said. “We’ve been working hard since the beginning of August. We’ve been working really hard in practice and I just think that we’re really excited to get the season going.”

The team has played some high level competition including 6A Southlake Carroll and 6-time state champion Lovejoy leading up to district play but Friday’s game could be the most important.

“I think Wakeland is going to be our biggest competitor,” Johnson said. “They have a lot of really big kids and they can hit really hard but I think on Friday we can take them.”

Starting district play means the road to playoffs begins in earnest with every game affecting the team’s chances of playing in the postseason.

“I think we are going to have a great showing tonight and through the rest of districts,” head coach Ui Womble said. “All of our pre season has spent preparing to get to this point that we’re at right now and I think that the kids have done a really good job.”

With Wakeland having completed its non-district season with a 21-4 record, Womble and the team are ready for the Wolverines.

“It’s exciting I’m glad to get to play [Wakeland] finally,” Womble said. “We’ve seen them at a couple tournaments but haven’t actually been across the net from them. They’ve got some big attackers and good setting, but we plan to go at them pretty hard and try and wreck their system that they have going.”
