Whether it’s something about school, being a student, or a social issue, columnist Emma Cramption tries to make sure her message is heard in her weekly column “Say it Louder”.

We get two days to process what’s going to be happening, then we get a whole weekend to work with the information we were given and get ready for the real work to start.

The fact that school starts on a Thursday this year has a lot of people talking and confused. When I first heard this, I too was very confused and almost opposed to it. However, after thinking about it, I think it’s a good way to start the year.

The first two days, Thursday and Friday, are most likely just going to be syllabus days where the gist of the course you’re taking is established and you get a basic idea of how the year is going to go.

To me, this is stress-relieving because we get those two days to get introduced to the new year with no particular pressure. The first week of school was always overwhelming to me because it the first couple days always felt like dipping your toes in the pool whereas the rest of the week was a full on dive.

This way, we get two days to process what’s going to be happening, then we get a whole weekend to work with the information we were given and get ready for the real work to start. Also, this makes things seem more organized because then the Monday we come back we can just jump right into school and have the beginning things out of the way.

Another reason I like starting on a Thursday is that I always hated having to scramble for school supplies after the first two days of school, but now we get the whole weekend. This way gives everybody time to not only process the new year, but physically prepare for it as well.
