  • Freshmen have been reading Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451. Despite what they’re reading, all of this is to prepare for the English STAAR Tuesday.

  • Chelsea Hamilton, librarian, talks to English teacher, Vanessa Melvin’s English class about books.

  • Children, adolescents, and adults alike share in celebrating World Read Aloud Day this Wednesday.

  • Librarian Chelsea Hamilton scans a book.

  • Pushing a cart of books, librarian Chelsea Hamilton visits English classes, giving them the opportunity to check out books on the go.

In an attempt to bring reading beyond academics, librarian Chelsea Hamilton brought a small selection of best-selling books to English classrooms on Monday and Tuesday.

“Sometimes the teachers can’t cut out a good chunk of time to bring the class down to the library, so I figured it might be easier for me to take the library to the classes,” Hamilton said. “I also thought it might make it easier for those indecisive students if I only pick certain books, so I’m picking the award winners, the best sellers, the ones that have the highest circulation rate.”

In the eyes of English teacher David Barr, this is a great opportunity for students to gain an interest in reading.

“I think this is an awesome idea,” Barr said. “Bringing the library to the kids, and creating a really good selection of books that they would be interested in.”

Making the time to go to the library is a struggle for freshman Marli Jacobs.

“I’ve only been to the library twice. In middle school we used to go with our teachers, but not in high school,” Jacobs said. “We have so much homework now and we don’t have much time.”

Students, including Kylie Kaekhoonmuang, got the opportunity to peruse through about 50 different library books.

“I think it’s pretty good because a lot of students don’t take in mind to go to the library so you bring the books to them,” Kaekhoonmuang said. “You just help them out and give them a good book they’ll actually like, and she’ll pick out the best sellers and most checked out so she brings the popular ones.”
