In the planning stages for years, Emerson High School is scheduled to open to students in August, and now it has officially chosen its school mascot as the Mavericks.

“Being a Maverick means going outside of your comfort zone and doing things you didn’t think were possible,” Emerson Principal Kristen Sommers said in a Frisco ISD news release. “It’s about being fearless.”

Students will have a large part in determining the school’s academic preferences and other aspects when it opens in the fall of 2021.

“Mavericks are independent and not afraid to take risks,” Emerson Associate Principal Rich Balling said in the Frisco ISD news release. “We want to empower students and create a learning community that is safe for all students.”

Although not all students voted for Mavericks, freshman, and future Emerson High School student Aditi Darodkar thinks it makes sense.

“I didn’t really vote for the Mavericks, I voted for the Grizzlies, but I really think Mavericks would accurately represent Emerson,” Darodkar said. “Mavericks usually represent a new start or somebody who is brave or courageous, and unique, and they are doing something new for the first time.

Emerson will open to freshmen and sophomores who live east of Custer Road, including current freshmen from both Liberty High School as well as Independence High School.

“I want our students to fulfill their potential and be successful in their life after they leave Emerson in all the ways they want to pursue their dreams,” Sommers said in the Frisco ISD news release. “Emerson High School is more than a building, we are the Mavericks paving the way for ourselves and others.”
