Diving deep into regionals after a snow and ice delay, Redhawk swim and dive come out the other side with one athlete advancing to state. Along with multiple top finishes are a few broken school records.

After getting postponed from its original date due to inclement weather, the Redhawks swim team finally dove into regionals with the boys finishing 8th in the 200 medley reaching the A final and junior Maria Oushalkas winning the 200 freestyle and placing 3rd in 500 freestyle.

“I feel great about it,” swim head coach Nick Dion said. “The boys were challenged at the beginning of the year to reach that A final in a relay and they did that. Maria had a terrific meet and has really set herself up for an exceptional state meet.”

After placing 1st and 3rd in her events, Maria Oushalkas will be heading to state Feb. 18-19 in Austin.

“I feel great about advancing,” she said. “It’s nice to see my hard work pay off. In terms of what I need to work on, I just need to work more on pushing my underwater on the last 50 so that I can beat my competitors and win state.”

But Oushalkas didn’t just accomplish a spot at states, she also happened to break two school records in the process: the 200 freestyle record with a time of 1:52.20, and the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:06.79.

“It feels good that I keep breaking my own records multiple times within a year,” Oushalkas said. “It shows how much I improve within one year.”
