Representing the school as the only Redhawk at the 5A UIL Swim Meet in Austin, junior Maria Oushalkas playced 5th in the 200 free and 11th in the 500 free on Saturday.

“I’m not as happy as I could have been with my performance since I added time in both, however it’s still an improvement from last year so I guess that is a plus,” Oushalkas said. “Hopefully next year I can medal in both events, or at least medal in the 200.”

Just days after finishing her season, Oushalkas is already looking to next year.

“You know I’m pretty proud of how much I’ve dropped in both events from the beginning of this season,” she said. “However, I can definitely improve my endurance so that I can speed things up and solidify a medal for myself next year. Overall this has been a pretty successful year for me and I’ve achieved some goals I’ve been working on for years now.”

For head coach Nick Dion, it was a successful season.

“For me, a terrific season,” Dion said. “You always have challenges and I think our guys and girls rose to a lot of those and made it to where they and I wanted to go. I think Maria did well against the best the state has to offer. The goal is to always have your last swim be your best. Maria did a great job of competing hard.”
