The clock starts ticking for Frisco ISD graduating seniors as the annual Frisco Education Foundation scholarship opens Thursday and closes on Dec. 22 at 4 p.m.

“We have found that whether it’s three weeks or three months, the applicants pretty much have the same trend in when they decide to submit it and complete it and start their application,” FEF Director Allison Miller said in a previous Wingspan article. “So three weeks gives them a solid deadline with a time commitment, kind of rallying them to get the application done.”

FEF has given out more than $9.4 million since 1999 and senior Katie Brown finds the scholarship opportunities as the chance at extra help in paying for college.

“It’s still good even if it only helps buy college books or something like that,” Brown said. “It’s still really helpful for just that extra boost of money.”

Students such as Red Rhythm senior Kanen Braden believe that their athletic efforts will be recognized through the scholarship.

“I’ve been a part of the drill team for three years now and invested so much time in it so it only makes sense to get something back for that,” Braden said.

With more than hundreds of scholarships available, FEF offers aid to a wide range of students which appeals to AP Psychology teacher Tim Johannes.

“It’s a good scholarship and I think a lot of kids get it if they just do the paperwork,” Johannes said. “They don’t just take academics into consideration, but they also offer athletic ones and a variety of different community services. So they give money to a lot of different students which I really like.”

Even though nearly 9,000 students have been awarded FEF scholarships over the years, humanities teacher Beth Evans believes many eligible students are not utilizing this financial opportunity given by FEF.

“If you apply you have a really good chance of getting in,” Evans said. “I will say that I have not seen as many students take advantage of it as I should. Typically if you apply you have a good chance of getting something and all those little scholarships add up in the end.”
