National Honor Society Applications are open for incoming upperclassmen. To apply, students must have a minimum of a 4.0 unweighted GPA and complete the application including one short essay and two teacher recommendations. Current juniors in the program do not need to re-apply.

“I think anybody who wants to be involved more in their community and has standards for themselves that they’d like to uphold, throughout the school year, is a good person to apply for this program,” NHS vice president senior Riya Khosla said.

Sophomore Tanvi Desai wants to take advantage of the opportunity to be involved in her community.

“I want to apply to NHS because it gives me the opportunity to immerse myself in the community, get more volunteer hours,” Desais said. “And it gives me motivation to get my grades up and be a better student and can help with college apps.”

Sophomore Riya Sharma, hopes NHS will allow her to take more initiative in school overall.

“I think this will give me more experience in leadership roles which will help me in the future,” she said.

For Khosla, the biggest part of NHS is giving back to the community. Students must obtain 10 volunteer hours per semester to stay in NHS, with 10 out of the total having to be FISD-related volunteering.

“One thing that we emphasize the most in NHS is having volunteer hours,” Khosla said. “Not simply because it’s a requirement to be met, but because it allows you the opportunity to be a bigger part of your community than you may have been in years past.”
