The wrestling teams took on District 8-5A on Saturday, finishing with three district champs, six regional qualifiers, and three alternates.

“Both the girls and boys teams competed well,” co-head coach Justin Koons said. “We knew it was going to be tough to make the top three as a team based on our knowledge of the other schools in the district. On the girls side, we had two district champs. Going in, that was what was expected out of those two and they did not disappoint winning in dominant fashion. The boys team battled tough all day long.”

Senior James Ethan Harris took home the championship for the boys, and feels hopeful for the future of the team.

“I fought hard and got first in districts,” Harris said. “As far as our team goes, even though we only had three district finalists on the boys team, I am proud of our team’s attitude and work ethic. Most of our team that didn’t place are super young and will do amazing in the next couple of years.”

Along with senior Mercede Alvarez, junior Taylor Clapp took home first place for the girls.

“I did pretty well at districts, took first out of eight schools and wrestled some of the most solid matches I have had,” Clapp said. “The team did great, we had a ton of great matches. Overall it was a great tournament for the team and I’m excited to see how we do at region.”
