In their first District 6-5A game of the season, the Redhawk football team is taking on the Frisco Racoons Friday at 7 p.m. at Kuykendall Stadium.
“We really just have better spirit than them,” junior Reid Sommers said. “That means a lot in the game. We just need to make sure to protect our Q.B. tonight because we only have one right now.”
Starting quarterback junior Jacob Nickell is out for Friday’s game with a respiratory infection, leaving sophomore Khi Bunting to take the lead.
“I’m a little nervous but more confident tonight,” Bunting said. “I believe in us and just hope we come out with a win.”
Airing it out has replaced ground and pound as Frisco’s offense has transitioned from a run-heavy offense to a pass-friendly scheme.
“Frisco High has been one of the few teams around that kinda ran an old-school offense, and they have done it forever,” head football coach Matt Swinnea said. “It’s hard to practice against the old one cus it’s hard to duplicate it. This year, they’ve changed, and there is not a lot different [now] between what they are doing than what everyone else is doing.”
Sitting at 0-2, the Redhawks have been learning from their mistakes, watching film from their past games.
“I told them if we were on trial and we used the film as evidence against us, last couple games you could see we had opportunities to win if we just did things better,” Swinnea said. “So that’s the key, doing things better.”
