Students turn blackjack into a learning tool

Card games and computer science may not seem like they would go together, but students in computer science are using a popular casino game as a learning tool.

“The blackjack lab is a extension of a more simple version,” computer science teacher Alexa Hamilton said. “A month ago we did a shorter version of this lab, and in this version is expanding on that by using DO loops, they are coding the computer to play with them. Working on the do-loop skill allows them to have them nested and create the complexity that is required.”

Students such as sophomore Julio Velo enjoy this lab, as he is a fan of blackjack.

“I find fun once your done coding with it, you can play blackjack which is pretty fun,” Velo said. “Usually we don’t do games but this one is fun because I like this game and I know how to play it.”
