According to my Spotify Wrapped, I listened to over 100,000 minutes of music in 2023. These are some of my favorite albums released this year that dominated my playlists.
Firstly, SOS by SZA is to me, and many others, THE album of the year. SOS was technically released last December, but I’m still counting it for my list. I like every single song on this album, especially Used and Snooze. I was lucky enough to see SZA perform this album live, which made me love it even more.
This one also probably shouldn’t count, but Call Me If You Get Lost: The Estate State was one of my favorites of the year. This album is essentially a post-album EP for Tyler the Creator’s 2021 Call Me If You Get Lost. It has all the original songs along with an additional 8 that weren’t on the first album. My favorites that were added are What A Day and Heaven To Me.
Another of my favorites is One Wayne G. Unlike most of Mac DeMarco’s albums, this one is over nine hours of mostly instrumental music. I listened to it mostly while studying this year. This album helped me get through studying for AP and STAAR tests at the end of last school year.
Voir Dire is a Hip-Hop album with Earl Sweatshirt and The Alchemist, both who I really like. Although it’s only about 25 minutes long, I had it on repeat for months after it was released on streaming platforms in October. My favorite songs on the album are Vin Skully and Heat Check.
Lastly, Red Moon in Venus is the third album by Kali Uchis, and was released in March. This one has been in rotation pretty much all year. I love the theme behind the lyrics and the mostly slow tempo R&B feel. Although I really like every song on the album, Moonlight might have to be the best.
