Wingspan: When and why did you start wrestling?
Schueler: “My freshman year, I started because my brother was in it. He said I could make friends there.”
Wingspan: What is your favorite part about wrestling?
Schueler: “It’s challenging, you never have an easy day in practice, and you’re constantly pushed to your limits. And then, your work finally pays off when you’re on the mat.”
Wingspan: What is the most difficult part about wrestling?
Schueler: “It’s all a mental game. Fighting the urge to quit when you’re getting beat, to walk when we’re running a mile, and cry when you lose a match is the hardest part in wrestling.”
Wingspan: Who has been your biggest supporter?
Schueler: “My little brother, he has no idea what’s going on, but his face goes red cheering me on.”
Wingspan: Who is your biggest inspiration?
Schueler: “Taylor Clapp, she’s an amazing wrestler and an even better leader.”
Wingspan: Wrestling being a physical sport, how has injury impacted you?
Schueler: “My sophomore year, I got a concussion that cut my whole season short. It messed up my vision, but I went to physical therapy and was being as active as I could be, just so I [could] get back to my team.”
Wingspan: Even though a solo sport, how does your team come into play?
Schueler: “You’re practicing with your team, suffering with your team, celebrating with your team. Even when you’re alone on the mat, your team is always on the sidelines cheering you on.”
Wingspan: What does your future with wrestling look like?
Schueler: “I’m planning on doing it my senior year, and hopefully get past regionals and go to state. Even if I don’t, I’ll always have a love for it in my heart.”
