Quinta Brunson, creator and star of Abbott Elementary, just made history as the first Black woman to win the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series in over 40 years. At the 2024 Emmys on Jan. 15 Brunson took home the award for her role as Janine Teagues in the popular sitcom.
Abbott Elementary is a workplace mockumentary set in Philadelphia. It follows the staff of a predominantly black elementary school. After being set back a few months due to the Writers Strike, the third season is set to premiere on Feb. 7th.
My family and I have been rewatching season one and two to prepare for Feb. 7th. No other show makes the whole family laugh like Abbott Elementary. Each member of the diverse cast of characters brings something to the table. They’re all relatable and amusing in their own ways. You can’t but help root for Janine and her romance between Gregory, first grade teacher and love interest.
I think many people would agree that Ava Coleman, played by Janelle James, carries the show. Ava is the unqualified principal who is only out for herself. Her timely out of pocket comebacks rarely fail to make me laugh, and the dynamic between her and Gregory has to be one of the funniest subplots in the series.
Although James’s character is a standout, every actor in the show is exceptional, as is the writing. Includings Brunson’s Outstanding Lead Actress Award, Abbott Elementary has been nominated for 15 Emmys, winning 4, and has also won three Golden Globes.
My anticipation for the next season is higher than ever. I can’t wait for Abbott Elementary to be back in session.
