Academic Decathlon is advancing to the state finals on Friday in Houston’s George R. Brown Convention Center. “I am most looking forward to being in a new city and exploring and experiencing that with my friends and of course, competing,” sophomore Meenal Ahlawat said.

Academic decathlon competed in its regional competition Friday and Saturday. The team scored the 10th highest points across the entire state of Texas for medium school and is advancing to the state finals in San Antonio.

“We have been working all year on AcDec,” head coach Tim Johannes said. “We have been studying 10 different subjects. Each kid gave a speech, an interview, wrote an essay and seven other subjects that we competed on and we were able to make it to the state meet in San Antonio.”

For senior Luit Deka, it was difficult for him to manage his time with Academic Decathlon and his other classes.

“Personally, I really had to prioritize my time,” Deka said. “I knew I could medal in Art so l spent most of not all of my time studying for that rather than other subjects. As a result, though I did well in Art, my scores in other areas were not as good.”

While each student worked rigorously for their individual events, their hard work paid off for the team as a whole.

“I’m glad my hard work paid off.It was also nice to see some of my friends medal as well since they’ve worked hard all year,” Deka said. “I spent lots of hours studying and took lots of notes and I’m glad it paid off in the end.”
