Redhawks track and field hopes to finish strong at the Wylie East Distance and Relays meet Thursday at 4 p.m.
Since this meet is specifically for distance and relay runners, some runners are being put into events they would not typically participate in.
“I want to allow some of the kids to run different events than they did at the Tri Meet so that they can see some of their other strengths and help them grow in their skills,” girls’ head coach Khera Vay said.
The opportunity to try different events has some athletes setting new goals.
“My personal goal is to try to place in the 4x400m relay,” sophomore Cecelia Rowe said. “It’s not my first time running the 4×400 but I usually run hurdles. I think we have strong groups for the relays though.”
This is especially true for the 4x400m relay runners, such as Rowe, who have less experience running the 4×400.
“A couple of girls are getting pushed into the 4x400m relay that are kind of hesitant about running it,” Vay said. “I think they’ll surprise themselves and I see the potential in them to be a 4×400 runner.”
This meet also provides freshmen the chance to show off their skills and learn more about themselves.
“We have a lot more freshmen running relays for this event,” Vay said. “I’m a little nervous about them executing the handoffs with minimal practice but they’re smart kids and they perform well under pressure so they’ll be fine.”
With the season in its infancy, Vay has simple objectives at Thursday’s meet.
“Since we’re in early season right now my main objective for the team is to let them build relationships with each other and for us to have some fun,” Vay said.
