In this weekly blog, senior Haley Ward shares a little bit of everything: deep dives on her favorite topics, her fashion favorites, and how to make the most out of your high school years.

If he’s not calling you and if he doesn’t marry you after 7 years, he’s just not that into you!

He’s Just Not That Into You (2009) navigates the ‘rules’ around dating. Just because your aunt’s friend’s mom married the man that did not call her for two weeks after a date, does not mean that will happen to you. You’re not the exception, you’re the rule.

The rom com stars four female leads: Ginnifer Goodwin, Jennifer Aniston, Scarlett Johanssen and Jennifer Connelly. You follow their journey through three different relationships and through them they teach you the different rules.

The basis of the rules states that: if a man likes you, you will know. There will not be any confusing signals that you have to interpret. If he doesn’t call you, then he doesn’t want to call you. Ginnifer Goodwin or Gigi, offers a really true point of view: as kids we are taught that if a boy is mean to you he likes you, and this just sends a girl down a path of overthinking.

I really like the concept of this movie, but it was not my favorite rom com. The only couple that had an interesting story was Gigi and Alex, and even their story had parts that did not flow perfectly. Alex sets the main idea of these rules and starts off by guiding Gigi through her failed relationships that she still has hope for.

This movie does provide some real life guidance: do not chase something that does not want you. It is also a good rule of thumb that these ‘rules’ will stand true, but there are always those times where they do not apply. Even Gigi and Alex run into this as he ends the movie by saying, “you are my exception”.

I rate this movie a 2.5 out of 5 hearts. Still an enjoyable movie, but one that I probably would not sit down again to watch!

Love, Haley
