As of Thursday, pop star Sabrina Carpenter has finally released her much-anticipated album “Short n’ Sweet”, which features the hit singles “Espresso” and “Please Please Please”.
The album immediately took off among fans, which isn’t a surprise considering “Espresso” rose to number three on the Billboard Hot 100 and “Please Please Please” soon topped that as number one. The two songs embrace catchy backtracks and clever lyrics, a recurring theme throughout the album.
Many of the songs vary between synth, guitar, and piano intros, which helps set the tone for each specific song. Throughout the album, Carpenter also dabbles in a little bit of country with “Slim Pickins”, a woeful song which features twangy guitar and a hint of a country accent.
In “Bed Chem”, “Juno”, and “Good Graces”, the song opens with a guitar/synth intro which serves as a fun backtrack for the rest of the song. These songs explore the excitement of a new relationship and talk about compatibility between partners. They have a very similar feel to Carpenter’s previous smash hit “Nonsense”. As seen in “Nonsense”, Carpenter uses her trademark lyricist skills to create three more songs perfect for sing-alongs.
Meanwhile, “Please Please Please”, “Coincidence”, “Taste”, and “Sharpest Tool” seem to be written later on in the figurative relationship timeline. They discuss relationships going or that have already gone south by featuring tons of witty lyrics with double meanings. “Coincidence” and “Sharpest Tool” call out toxic behavior in relationships, including cheating and not communication. “Taste” is more tongue-in-cheek and seems to be a letter from Carpenter to her ex-boyfriend’s new girlfriend, all while harnessing a fun, upbeat feel and a more rock-centered backtrack.
“Lie to Girls”, “Don’t Smile”, and “Dumb & Poetic” are the most sad songs out of the whole album. They have much calmer backtracks; “Dumb & Poetic” and “Lie to Girls” being mainly guitar while “Don’t Smile” has a more chill R&B type feel. These songs focus on relationships that have ended, and discuss the bad habits of the ex that led to the eventual breakup. These songs mostly feature raw guitar and gentle vocals, which contrasts with the angry lyrics. “Dumb & Poetic”, “Don’t Smile”, and “Lie to Girls” are the slowest songs out of the album.
Although there is variety across the album, each song meets the standard that was set by fans and critics alike in anticipation for the finally-released album. Yet again, Carpenter has proved her skill in the music industry with her impressive singing and songwriting skills. Featuring elements of pop, R&B, and even some country, “Short n’ Sweet” has a little bot of something for everyone.
